GAVISE

Exploring the role of serious games in supporting territorial and institutional adaptation to agroecological and climate challenges.

The GAVISES project investigates how local authorities can adapt their institutions to sustainably manage the ecological services provided by hedgerow networks (biodiversity, carbon storage, water regulation). Its objective is to identify a viable balance between ecological complexity and institutional capacity. Serious games constitute the project’s main experimental tool. They are used to:

(1) Test fundamental hypotheses related to the management of socio-ecological complexity. To achieve this, the project is developing a first hybrid serious game (board and digital formats) associated with a multi-agent computer model tested under controlled conditions across a range of territories.

(2) Assess the usefulness of the theoretical knowledge acquired in real-world contexts through a second generation of hybrid games deployed in more targeted territories.

Alongside empirical analyses and dynamic modelling, the serious games developed within GAVISES will be used to explore how local stakeholders can overcome institutional barriers (cognitive, historical, and economic constraints) in order to adapt to climate change. GAVISES is led by an interdisciplinary consortium involving INRAE, the CNRS, and Université Clermont Auvergne. The project aims to produce both scientific knowledge and practical tools to support the transition toward sustainable agroecological landscapes.
